Black Bear Nation FTS: Friday to Sunday

@BlackBearNation kicked off 2014 with a bang, as @MaineIceHockey, @BlackBearWBB, and @BlackBearMBB were all in action this past weekend.  As always, @FillTheSteins is your one-stop source for getting caught up on all the weekend sports action.  Let’s get right to it!

Men’s Ice Hockey: The Maine men’s ice hockey team had the suffered the first heartbreak of the weekend when Quinnipiac, the #8 team in the nation in last week’s poll, scored the game-winning goal 18:57 into the third period to pick up a 2-1 win over the Black Bears Friday night.  Devin Shore was once again the scoring star for Maine, netting a shorthanded goal in the second period to level the game at 1.  The loss drops Maine to 10-7-2 on the season.  The Black Bears are off for the week in preparation for Frozen Fenway against the hated BU Terriers at Fenway Park this Saturday.

Women’s Basketball: The Lady Black Bears were the victims of the second heartbreak of the weekend in Black Bear Nation and their second 1-point defeat in three games, this time at the hands of Yale, 86-85 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor on Sunday.  Despite shooting over 61% from the field and outrebounding Yale 32-28, the Black Bears were beaten by a last-second lay-up by Yale’s Nyasha Sarju.  With the loss, Maine falls to 6-8 on the season.  They open America East conference play on Wednesday when they host UMBC.

Men’s Basketball: After a rough non-conference season that saw the Black Bears pick up only one victory against a Division I opponent, Maine got the America East portion of their season off to a perfect start when they beat Binghamton 82-66 in the second half of a women’s/men’s hoops doubleheader at the Cross Center on Sunday.  Maine’s defense was the story, as they held Binghamton to a 37.3% shooting percentage from the field while outrebounding the Bearcats 47-43.  The win puts Maine’s record at 3-10 overall and 1-0 in America East play.  Maine’s next game is another conference tilt, as they travel to Hartford to take on the Hawks this Thursday night.

With just FIVE DAYS till Frozen Fenway, remember to sign up for Fill The Steins’ Unofficial Pre-Pre-Game Party at Boston Beer Works on Brookline Ave., right across the street from Gate A at Fenway Park.  Our “party before the party before the game” starts at 1:30 and is FREE TO ATTEND!!!  We hope to see everyone in Fill The Steins Nation at Boston Beer Works before we head over to the official UMaine Alumni Association Pre-Game Party (or pass out drunk back at the hotel…either way).

See you all in Boston this Saturday!!!
