FTS Q&A: Matt Donahue

Matt Donahue is the epitome of a Black Bear Hockey fan.  Growing up in Bangor, Donahue would attend Maine hockey games with his family.  Upon enrolling at the University of Maine in 2006, he never missed a game while studying for his undergrad (earned in 2010) or his Master’s degree (earned in 2012).  It should be no surprise, then, that Donahue was the grand champion of the Black Bears of Boston’s and the Black Bears of Portland’s Frozen Fenway Photo Contest.

For submitting the photo that illustrated the most school spirit, Donahue was awarded four tickets to this coming Saturday’s (we don’t think the game’s been rescheduled for Friday night yet…we’re not sure) clash against the hated BU Terriers at Fenway Park.  Even though a picture is worth a thousand words, one picture may not even be enough to summarize Donahue’s love for Black Bear hockey.

“I didn’t miss a game from day one through the end of my career [at Maine].  I’m still a season ticket holder and get to all the games,” said Donahue, a School Based Director at Big Brothers Big Sisters in Bangor, an organization which often partners with the Black Bear Mentor Program.

“Getting to all the games” means Donahue has suffered through some pretty lean years by Maine’s high men’s hockey standards.  Like many experts, however, he is confident the team has turned a corner under first year coach and glory day throwback Red Gendron.

“This year’s team is really exciting,” said Donahue when he spoke with Fill The Steins shortly after being chosen as the contest winner by Gendron himself.  “This team has a lot of the characteristics of the older teams.  There’s excitement in the building and an expectation that they’re going to win.”

Donahue’s friends also had an expectation of victory when it came to the BBoB/BBoP Spirit Contest.  Donahue told FTS it was his buddy’s idea to snap the photo and enter it in the contest.  Even though he was already planning on going to the game, Donahue is giving away his tickets to friends and family, which will only heighten the level of Black Bear enthusiasm at Fenway on Saturday afternoon (the game hasn’t been rescheduled again, has it?  Okay…we’ll stop).

So, for his school spirit, enthusiasm, and general photogenic awesomeness, we Fill The Steins to Matt Donahue, a true Black Bear Extraordinaire!!!
