Black Bear Nation FTS: Friday to Sunday

After a joyous Frozen Fenway weekend in Black Bear Nation and strong midweek results for men’s hockey and women’s hoops, this was a rough weekend for the Big Three in UMaine winter sports.  Four games, one draw, and three losses made this one a toughy to stomach for supporters of UMaine athletics.  However, we here at Fill The Steins support the teams through good times and bad, so let’s take a quick look at the damage from this weekend’s action:

Men’s Ice Hockey: The weekend started okay for the men’s ice hockey team, as Ryan Lomberg’s late third period goal lifted the Black Bears to a 1-1 draw at UMass-Lowell Friday night.  Saturday, however, was a much taller task, and the Black Bears proved not up to the challenge, falling to the #3 Boston College Eagles by a final score of 7-2.  Goals from Jon Swavely and Stu Higgins were not enough to overcome three BC power play goals and three goals from the Eagles in both the second and third periods.  The weekend draw and loss put Maine’s record at 11-8-3 on the season and 5-3-2 in Hockey East.  The Black Bears return to the ice on Tuesday when they host New Brunswick at the Alfond.

Women’s Basketball: After taking the University of Vermont DOWNTOWN TO POUND TOWN in midweek, the women’s hoops teams were passengers on that train Saturday when they fell to Albany by a tally of 84-56.  Maine trailed by just four at halftime, but gave up 54 points in the second half while scoring only 30.  Ashleigh Roberts led the way with 22 points for the Black Bears, but Maine couldn’t overcome Albany’s 43-10 advantage in bench scoring.  The loss dropped Maine to 9-9 overall and 3-2 in America East play.  The ladies look to get back on the winning track when they travel to Lowell on Thursday to take on UMass-Lowell.

Men’s Basketball: The Maine men proved to be more competitive against the Great Danes on Saturday, however they still came up short at Memorial Gym, falling by a final score of 85-78.  The contest was ultra-competitive throughout, both on the scoreboard and the stat sheet.  The difference for the Black Bears, once again, came down to the turnover battle.  Maine’s 15 turnovers resulted in 19 Albany points, while the Black Bears were able to muster just 11 points on 11 turnovers from the visitors.  Forward Ethan Mackey led the charge with a career-high 24 points for Maine, who fell to 3-14 overall and 1-4 in America East.  Maine hosts UMass-Lowell at the Cross Insurance Center in their next contest, which is this Thursday at 7pm.

Fill The Steins will have much more on the men’s basketball program this week, as we’ll examine their challenges this season both on and off the court.  Be sure to check back with Fill The Steins this week for that and lots of other great new content as we’re in full spring semester swing!!!
