Throwback Thursday

If you think this is the worst winter ever on the UMaine campus and that outdoor spring sports will never get here, think again. While we can expect the first few home series for the Black Bear baseball and softball teams to be candidates for postponement, nothing compares to some of the more historic late winter storms that have lashed Orono through the years. For this Throwback Thursday we take a look at currently Mahaney Diamond as it looked at this same time in March of 1963.
Here is a picture from the periodical, “Collegiate Baseball”, and republished on College Baseball Today of former UMaine coach Jack Butterfield and player Dave Gaw attempting some batting practice on the diamond outside the Field House on the second day of Spring in 1963. The caption from the picture states that home plate was covered by 40 inches of snow; the first several home series were postponed to allow for the snow to melt. Now-a-days our Black Bear baseball and softball teams spend most of March in Florida to avoid the snow and they have the Mahaney Dome and field turf to help in pre-season training.
Both the baseball and softball teams are still scheduled to host UMass-Lowell at Mahaney Diamond and Kessock Field on Saturday at 1pm, respectively. Get out there and support the Black Bears, but you might want to bring a shovel.
