Homecoming

Homecoming 2014
Friday October 17th – Sunday October 19th
Orono, Maine

In 2013 we told you to “Keep Calm and Stein On”. Last year it was all about “Blurred Steins”. But for this year we are giving a shout out to the earlier risers that make this UMaine tradition great. 2014 Homecoming will be go by the title of “Rise and Stein” for all those fine people across Fill The Steins Nation. As in years past, our executive committee has organized a full weekend of activities to maximize your stein filling time. Want to join us? Use and follow the hashtag “#RiseAndStein” on Twitter all weekend long to find out where we are and what’s up next.

Here is a breakdown of our tentative schedule so far for Homecoming 2014:

Friday October 17th

5:00pm – Hilton Garden Inn/Hampton Inn
We are pleased to partner with the Hilton brand again for homecoming this year to offer discounted rates at their two Bangor locations; the Hilton Garden Inn and the Hampton Inn both on Haskell Road. While it isn’t Orono, the friendly staff at the HGI have been more than helpful through the years with our large group, especially when it comes to keeping the bar open into the wee hours of the morning.

6:00pm – Margarita’s

Whenever large amounts of alcohol are being consumed in a weekend the best possible option for your first meal is always Mexican food; it lays a solid foundation on which your other consumables can be stacked. We gather at Margarita’s to enjoy meals and beverages and to catch up on the times.

9:00pm – The Bear Brew Pub

Nothing fills the steins better than a local microbrew or several local microbrews and there’s no better place to do this than the Bear Brew Pub. With a variety of beers on tap and the opportunity to play pool or hit up the discotheque it makes for a great end to the first night of Homecoming weekend.

Saturday October 18th
Depending on your tolerance for stein filling, your breakfast may be sit-down, drive-thru, or better spent in bed. You’re on your own for that one, but the executive tailgating committee will be out the door early and waiting in line on College Avenue with the millions and millions of Black Bear faithful for a prized parking lot space.

8:00am – Hannaford
The tailgating sub-committee will organize in the hotel parking lot for the caravan over to the Hogan Road Hannaford Supermarket to stock up on all the essentials for the tailgate. Cash contributions are highly encouraged, especially if you can provided funds the evening prior to allow the sub-committee the most flexibility and buying power for the event.

9:30am – Tailgating

Opening three hours before to kick-off, our crew will be in line on College Avenue getting ready to move into our traditional tailgating location in front of the Field House. If you haven’t already provided funds for food, please feel free to bring your own, the grills will be open for business to cook up your meets. Please remember that although glass bottles are not allowed you are welcome to bring cans, cups, or steins to the tailgate.

2:00pm – Pat’s Pizza

The staple of any healthy collegiate diet is the consumption of massive amounts of pizza in the basement of Pat’s. Space is always limited so we encourage you to go immediately from the tailgating directly over to Pat’s so you can continue to stretch your waistline even further. After many pitchers and several rounds of Zingers we take a break for the late afternoon recovery period.

7:00pm – Great American Grill
While previous years had us heading out to The Sports Arena in Hermon for some bowling and billards, the younger members of Fill The Steins Nation dictate slightly earlier bed times. Our Saturday evening rally point for the last few years has been the Great American Grill at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bangor where most of us are staying. The staff has been great to allow us to pretty much take over the facility for poker games, drinking, and exchanging stories with fellow stein fillers.

Sunday October 19th

11:00am – Dysart’s

Like a weekend fling from your old college days, Sunday morning usually leaves you with an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of your stomach. What better way to fill the void left from leaving friends and losing brain cells than stopping by the world’s greatest truck stop, Dysart’s, on the way out of town. The long tables and trucker-size portions offer a poignant final act to another successful Homecoming.
