Black Bear Nation FTS: Friday to Sunday

This past weekend was a busy one in the world of Black Bear athletics.  There were wins, there were losses, and, with a big snowstorm impacting travel on Sunday, there was even a cancellation.  Fill The Steins has your complete round-up of all the action and all the results from the college of our hearts always.

Men’s Hockey: The UMaine men’s ice hockey team took American International College (AIC) DOWNTOWN TO POUND TOWN not once, but twice over the weekend.  The Black Bears started the thumping on Friday with a 7-1 win that was spearheaded by forward Devin Shore’s four assists to go with a shorthanded goal.  On Saturday, Maine showed no mercy, beating AIC 5-1 behind two goals from forward Ryan Lomberg.  The weekend sweep improved Maine’s record to 9-6-1 on the season.  The team will now enjoy some time off over the Christmas holiday before returning to action on December 28 against Princeton in the Florida College Classic.

Women’s Basketball: The women’s hoops team was not so fortunate over the weekend, as they were on the wrong side of a lopsided score when they fell to Northeastern 81-55 in Boston on Sunday.  Maine was led by Liz Wood’s 13 points and 9 rebounds, but could not overcome a 31.7% shooting percentage from the field.  With the loss, Maine fell to 5-5 on the season and will be back in action against Towson on December 21 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Women’s Hockey: The women’s hockey team had mixed results on their road trip, as they split their weekend series with Union College in Schenectady, NY.  On Friday night, the Bears fell 2-0 and picked up a 6-3 victory on Saturday.  After Friday’s shutout, the Black Bears’ capitalized on their limited power play opportunities on Saturday, as they went 3-4 with a player advantage.  The win was just Maine’s second of the season and brings their overall record to 2-13-5.  The team will enjoy an extended break before returning to action on January 11 against Boston University at the Alfond.

Men’s Basketball: Like their female counterparts, the Maine men’s hoops team was on the short end of the stick Friday night, as they fell 90-80 to Army at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.  Guard Xavier Pollard led or co-led the Bears in points (19), rebounds (6), and assists (4), but his efforts couldn’t keep Maine from losing its seventh straight game and falling to 1-8 on the season.  In addition to Army, the Black Bears were also defeated by the weather when Sunday’s scheduled game against UMPI was postponed due to the weekend snowstorm.  Instead, Maine will return to action on December 21 when they travel to Providence to take on the Friars.

Be sure to check back with Fill The Steins every Monday as we recap the previous weekend’s action and preview the teams’ upcoming games!
