Black Bear Nation FTS: Friday to Sunday

As Finals Week came to a close and Winter Break brought more legitimate winter weather, it was a relatively light weekend in Black Bear Nation.  With both hockey teams getting an early start to the Christmas break, it was up to the men’s and women’s hoops teams to hold it down this past weekend, and the teams ended the pre-Christmas portion of their respective schedules with mixed results.  Fill The Steins, however, never takes a weekend off, so here’s your quick recap of all the action from the hardcourt:

Women’s Basketball: The Lady Black Bears gave themselves and their fans at the Cross Insurance Center an early Christmas (or late Hanukkah, depending on your faith) present on Saturday, as they downed the visiting Towson Tigers by a score of 72-58.  Maine was once again led by stat sheet filler-upper Liz Wood, who scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.  Sophomore guard Lauren Bodine contributed 15 points to lead the scoring efforts for UMaine, who improved to 6-5 with the win.  The Lady Black Bears will be off for Christmas and return to action when they visit Sacred Heart on Sunday December 29.

Men’s Basketball: The men’s hoops team had to settle for coal in their stocking in the form of a 94-70 thumping at the hands of the Providence Friars in Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon.  Maine was led by Serbian junior forward Zarko Valjarevic’s 16 points and junior guard Xavier Pollard’s 15 points.  Their efforts, however, could not overcome Providence’s 46-23 rebounding advantage and the 30 second-chance points that came with it.  The loss dropped the Black Bears to 1-9 on the season, a record they’ll look to improve when they next take the court on Sunday December 29 against Middle Tennessee St. in Chattanooga.

As we head into the big holiday week, we Fill The Steins with Christmas cheer to all the UMaine sports teams, who we hope enjoy the time off with their families!

Remember that we’re less than three weeks from Frozen Fenway and we want to see YOU at Fill The Steins’ Unofficial Pre-Pre-Game Party at Boston Beer Works on Brookline Ave.  Be sure not to party too hard this Christmas and New Year’s and save some liver function for what’s sure to be a great winter’s day of filling the steins to the college of our hearts always!

Happy Festivus!!!
