MBB Head Coach Search Update

When UMaine athletic director, Karlton Creech, said there would be a nationwide search for the next head coach of the men’s basketball team he wasn’t kidding. Fill The Steins has received exclusive information this morning that a coach from a major program in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) is interested in the position.
New Mexico State University’s, Paul Weir, who has been with the Aggies for the last 7 seasons, the last 3 as the associate head coach, has expressed interest in the UMaine job according to reliable sources. NMSU has been to the NCAA Tournament 4 out of the last 5 seasons, and while the WAC isn’t what it used to be, that’s still 4 more tourney trip than UMaine can claim ever.  UMaine men’s basketball media coordinator, Christopher Hill, said that the program would not comment on the search at this time and would notify the media as more information became available on potential candidates.
The Aggies’ recent success has been tied to Weir and his “Canadian Pipeline” of recruiting with 4 players from the Toronto area on the team this past season. Weir, a Toronto native, has scouted across Canada for talent and has been able to sell our friends to the north on giving Las Cruces a try. The Canadian connection is interesting for the UMaine position which had success landing Justin Edwards two seasons ago before transferring to Kansas State. With Orono being a tough sell for many domestic players, the ability to draw talent from north of the border and beyond is key to rebuilding the Black Bears.
We can now also confirm that Dayton Assistant Head Coach, Tom Ostrom, is not considering the UMaine job as previously reported. With Archie Miller reviewing his options for other head coaching positions, we were told that Ostrom is happy and content at Dayton and has no plans to leave this off-season.
The head coaching position remains open on the UMaine Jobs website until tomorrow, at which time we should have a better idea of who has applied and who will be coming up to Orono for interviews. Expect a decision no later than mid-May and then let the rebuilding begin.
So what do you think Fill The Steins Nation? Does Paul Weir have the resume the Black Bears need to bring in talent and turn things around? Post your comments and let us know.
